Sometimes life, in an impersonal way, wakes up the part of you that focuses on your own well-being. Sometimes people instinctively and intentionally do things to inflame your concern for your own well-being.
Focusing on your own well-being is slavery. Sometimes you can consciously sense the slavery. Other times you feel free, but are stuck within boundaries you may not be aware of.
But why focus on yourself? The truth is much bigger than you. God suffers. Why not focus on God's suffering, taking the focus off of you?

Maybe you need to feel pain, to really sense the reality of it. Maybe by focusing on others' pain, you are trying to be above feeling pain yourself.
How can you understand God's pain if you never feel pain? Maybe the way to empathize with God is to feel your own pain, which is also God's pain because he feels what you feel, to feel it at the same time as him and in solidarity with him.
